CAT
A complete guide to CAT: eligibility, exam pattern, syllabus, preparation strategy, and frequently asked questions.
About This Exam
CAT (Common Admission Test) is the gateway to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and over 1,200 other top business schools across India, including FMS Delhi, SPJIMR, MDI Gurgaon, and IMT Ghaziabad. Around 2.3 lakh candidates take CAT each year for limited seats, with IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta being the most competitive. The exam is computer-based, two hours long, and tests three sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability. Each section is timed separately, and candidates can attempt them in a fixed order. CAT scores are typically expressed as percentiles, with top IIMs requiring scores above the 99th percentile (around 100+ marks out of 198). Beyond the CAT score, IIMs weight academic record, work experience, gender diversity, and performance in subsequent group discussions and personal interviews when finalising admissions. Most candidates spend six to twelve months in serious preparation, often combining self-study with mock test series from coaching institutes like TIME, IMS, Career Launcher, or Bulls Eye. CAT is generally considered fair and pattern-stable, which makes structured preparation reliably effective.

Preparation Tips
- Take a diagnostic mock test in the first week to identify your strongest and weakest sections
- Take at least one full-length mock test every week from month two of preparation onwards
- Spend more time analysing each mock than taking it; understanding mistakes is where real progress happens
- Build daily reading habit through quality publications like The Hindu, The Economist, and longform articles
- Practice solving questions under strict time limits to develop the speed CAT demands
- Do not panic over fluctuating mock scores; focus on the trend over weeks rather than any single test
Frequently Asked Questions
What CAT score do I need for IIM Ahmedabad?
Generally above 99.5 percentile for serious consideration at IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, or Calcutta. Academic record, work experience, gender diversity, and interview performance also matter significantly. A 99-percentile CAT score combined with a strong overall profile has a real shot, while a 99.9 percentile with weak profile may not get an interview.
How long should I prepare for CAT?
6 to 12 months of focused preparation is typical. Students with strong academic backgrounds may need less time, while those rebuilding fundamentals may need more. Consistency matters more than total months. Most successful candidates take 25 to 30 full-length mocks and analyse each thoroughly.
Is CAT the only MBA entrance exam?
No. XAT (for XLRI), SNAP (for Symbiosis), NMAT (for NMIMS), CMAT (for AICTE colleges), and GMAT (for international programmes and ISB) are other major MBA entrance exams. Most MBA aspirants take CAT plus 2 to 3 other exams to maximise their B-school options.
Can I crack CAT without coaching?
Yes, many successful candidates have. Self-study using Arun Sharma's books, 2IIM or Gradeup free content, and mock test series from TIME, IMS, or Career Launcher works well. Coaching provides structure and peer competition but is not strictly required if you have good self-discipline.
Is work experience mandatory for CAT?
No. You can appear for CAT as a final-year undergraduate or as a recent graduate. However, most top IIMs weight work experience significantly in final selections. IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta typically prefer candidates with 2 to 4 years of relevant work experience.
