An Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce. It is mandatory for any business importing or exporting goods or services.


Who Needs IEC?

  • Any business importing goods into India
  • Any business exporting goods from India
  • Service exporters (IT services, freelancing to foreign clients)
  • E-commerce sellers shipping internationally
  • NOT required for personal imports or exports below ₹5 lakh

  • Visit dgft.gov.in and register on the DGFT portal
  • Click 'Apply for IEC' and fill the application form
  • Enter business details — PAN, bank account, business address
  • Upload required documents (all in PDF format)
  • Pay fee of ₹500 online
  • IEC issued digitally within 1-2 working days
